Kalpana Chawla was the first Indian American astronaut and the first Indian woman to go into space. In 1997, She was a Space Shuttle mission expert, and in 2003 Columbia was one of the seven passengers killed in space disaster.

He went to the United States in 1982 and in 1984 obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington. Kalpana set a journey of 10.67 million kilometers in his first mission, of the Earth's 252 circlances.
Their first space mission began on November 19, 1997 as part of the six-astronaut team, with the space shuttle Columbia's flight STS-87. Kalpana was the first person born in India to be born in space and was the second person of Indian origin to fly into space. Rakesh Sharma flew in 1984 in the Soyuz T-11 spacecraft. Kalpana spent more than 360 hours in space in her first mission.
